A hinge bit is a great tool to have. It can create a perpendicular pilot screw in the wood behind any hardware with amazing ease and speed.

This particular bit has a collar that keeps the springing outer layer from coming out. Unfortunately, after using mine for less than a half hour the part came out completely, thus the outer layer can fall off the tool.

I am beyond the window of my Amazon return policy. I looked at Vermont American for warranty. They say to return it to manufacturer, but if they don't accept it they give me an address to mail it to and say they will replace it.

Funny thing is, is that if there is enough wood around the inner drill bit, the outer layer stays on. As long as I watch it to make sure I use it, the bit is still fairly functional.
