Product Review
Amazon.com Review
This Porter-Cable 19.2-volt, 1/2-inch cordless hammer drill kit offers 390 inch-pounds of maximum torque, a 20-position clutch, and a two-speed gearbox that reaches up to 1,500 rotations per minute and 19,500 beats per minute--more then enough power for any home-based project and generally plenty of power for professional applications. We found that this drill is solid enough to work on concrete without much bounce or slide, yet not so heavy that we had to put it down every few minutes. And the freedom of not having to deal with a cord is a considerable advantage. Furthermore, the keyless chuck makes bit changes quick and easy. The unit comes with two ni-cad rechargeable batteries and a diagnostic charger with an LED warning system. The batteries are interchangeable and will work with other Porter-Cable 19.2-volt tools. Each charges in less then an hour and provides plenty of run time for most uses. The batteries also have a unique slide-in loading system that makes battery attachment extremely tight and almost impervious to wear. Overall, the unit is relatively lightweight and, in our opinion, as well put together as any drill/driver we've used. --Jonathon Tudor

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, corded power from a cordless, December 28, 1999
This review is from: Porter-Cable 9887 19.2 Volt 1/2-Inch Cordless Hammer Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I am impressed,I purchased the hammer drill to put in the occasional tapcon screw to attach to concrete,as well as use it in the metalworking industry. We now have four of these, because they work. I have used it to run 9/16" reamers in heavy plate, drill large holes in stainless steel, and 2 1/2" holesaws thru wood, as well as drive screws. In the hammer drill mode it is a little hard on run time, but the convienance of not dragging a cord around, up & down a ladder, is worth it.This drill is as close to corded power as I have used. One word of caution, when driving screws, be sure to use the clutch because it will break or strip them if in drill mode. My hats off to Porter Cable on a useful, productive tool.

Since I know and trust the PorterCable brand name, it did not take much thinking to choose this product when I decided I needed a dependable, heavy duty, cordless drill. This one delivers! I bought it with the Tiger Saw in a 19.2 volt combo kit. The drill/driver has plenty of power, whether I am using it to drill 5/8 inch wiring holes with an auger bit in studs, or drive 5/16 inch lag screws. It is a bit heavy, but being cordless, it is a blessing if you need real power when doing a job that involves crawling around in the attic or under the house. True, the hammerdrill mode drains the battery quickly, but the convinience of having that action in a truly portable form outweighs the short life, especially when your in a pinch. I used the hammerdrill mode to help break up sandstone rocks in the ditch last weekend when I was digging out a leak in my gas service line. Always keep a spare battery with you, or one on the charger while you work, and you'll never lack for power. This is one...Read more

Received yesterday and I used it putting the new Brazilian cherry floor with walnut borders at night. This is my first ever cordless drill/driver. All I have for the past ten years for drilling is a less than $40 Craftman 3/8" corded drill. It has served me well. I did a bit of research on what I will get for this cordless drill/driver. I went to stores to handle similar models, DeWalt, Bosch, Makita, etc. I picked this one for the value and quality. It is a very nice tool at first look. I wish that I had it when putting the floor in our master bedroom. It's very comfortable to handle, although it's on the heavy side. But for this class, it's normal. Well balanced. I used it drill counter sinking holes with 3/8" plugs in Brazilian cherry since the air floor nailer could not face nail it (it's so hard), I have to set nails once a while even when blind nailing. The drill operates smoothly. Love the electronic brake feature. The clutch setting for driving the screws is also...Read more
